adventures in business, before and after, busy, christmas, flow blue, furniture, Marian Parsons, milk paint, Miss mustard seed, painting, stripping, summer cottage antiques, veneer
It’s been a couple days since I posted. I’ve been scrambling to get all the to do’s checked off my list before my vacation to Hawaii. There has been a hole in the middle of my space at Summer Cottage for almost two weeks now. I still have Christmas decorations in my family room, and trying to get everything we need for our trip…oh yeah and my boys birthdays! Arrrggg…
But I have been happily painting the last two nights. It’s been so long since I’ve spent some real time painting. I just really love the process from deciding what color and style I want to create. To the “Well I guess that didn’t work I’ll do this” along the way and the end result that is satisfying. Every once in awhile I really am not happy with the end result but it happens. It’s just fun to me and I love it! This is what I have been working on.
This piece I posted a week ago or so but I had to pull up a bunch of veneer on the drawers before I could paint it.
I used a putty knife and an iron I bought at the thrift store for $5 just for the purpose of stripping veneer. You set it on a high setting and if its stubborn you steam it and slowly pry it up with your putty knife. You can see on the bottom part of the drawer that the steam discolored. As long as you don’t get carried away it’s fine once you paint over it.
This is one of the drawers once I got all the veneer up that I wanted to remove. I went over it with a fine grit sandpaper with my orbital sander to get a smooth surface before I painted.
This is a drawer after one coat of paint. I gravitate toward grays, white and cream for the most part so I am trying to venture out into bolder colors. I have all these great colors of Milk paint so I’ve started trying them out. This is Flow Blue it really is a beautiful color. And pardon my disastrous garage that’s how all my life is right now just a mess that I have been functioning amongst until I can get to it.
And this sweet little night stand I picked up yesterday at the thrift store. I will post pictures of these pieces finished. I also did a coffee table that really isn’t all that exciting but when it’s all done I may post that too we’ll see. I said in my last post I was doing some more give aways so here is the details….
First I have a copy of Miss Mustard Seed’s Book Inspired You autographed by Marian up for grabs.

I’d like to paint my dining table with MMS milk paint in Linen. I did a headboard in this color and it came great.
Miss MustardSeed has been such an inspiration to me. I’d love to win a copy of her book. Which might be the only way I get it as my goal/life project for 2013 is to Not Buy Anything new this year!! Thanks for the great give aways.
Oh, I love MMS and have been following her for a VERY long time. Would love to win her book. I want to start using MMS Milk Paint this year and her book would be so helpful. Thank you for sponsoring this giveaway.

I have a pie crust coffee table my husband retrieved from a dumpster that would be great to use MMS Milk Paint on. Not certain what color I would use. The top is in perfect condition, but looks like something has damaged the edges, great for aging paint.

I’d like to paint my old hoosier cabinet with milk paint. Thanks for the chance to win some!
My one inspiring idea for the new year is to learn or do something new. I enjoy looking back at the years and recalling all of the new things I’ve tried. I don’t have to be good at them or even do them more than once.
I “like” your Facebook page!
I would love to paint that green dresser in out living room – fingers crossed! 🙂
I’m inspired this year to piggy back off of my husband’s idea to ‘give till it hurts’. One of the this my girl’s & I will be doing is singling out a specific person once a month to give a small gift to. It will range from backing a batch of cookies for a neighbor, to wrapping a dollar store gift for a play date friend, to buying coffee for the car behind us at the drive thru (love Mocha Mamma in RP). Simple little acts to randomly brighten someones day. A little challenge for me & the girls to give of yourself.
I have my oldest daughter’s wooden toy box. She is 20 now and I would like to paint it to convert it over to a hope chest of sorts. I liked your page on fb and love your painted pieces! I too am a furniture painter and sell out of an antique/resale shop.
as the mom of 5, i haven’t given enough time to making my house my own. i work for a home decor business and yet don’t take the time to make my own home look great! that’s changing this year! i’ve already started. we can’t finish what we never start 🙂 headed over to share on FB!
I liked your facebook page. I would use the paint on a dresser my nephew gave me for Christmas. Can not wait to redo it and use it my house!
I have a bedroom ladies dresser and mans dresser that need new life. I want to love them again. I don’t so much anymore right now.
This year we plan on some major remodelling in the house …. I have been inspired by all of the new blogs (like this) and fb pages that I am following! Hope to create some of the wonderful looks 🙂
I would paint a gate leg table…for up at the lake.
I am new and am trying to save enough to buy one bonding and one paint – I will soon unless I win! Just lost my job and hoping to do some furniture to keep my spirits up. I will follow you nonetheless!! Your work is beautiful! New follower on facebook!
I have this old 1950’3 side by side gym locker that I would love to paint. It can hold my sons gyms equipment, yet look lovely in the house, perfect world for me!
I have a hand me down children’s rocking chair that i would love to paint for my 2 yr old!
So every shop I visit either on line or in person has some painted furniture or painted pieces of some kind…I have done pieces in the past the hard way and look forward to a try with some Miss Mustard Paints for the ease of some eliminaiton of some steps and would love to read a copy of her book! I am in the process of starting a small shop on a shoestring in my small NE Colorado town after loosing my job after sticking up for people that were being bullied, that is how companies deal with bulling I guess…no laws to go by so just easier to shove people out the door that try and deal with the real problem! But you know what they say…one door closes and another opens…so time to live the dream I have had for so many years…little by little we will get there! I dont know what I want to paint, I have a pair of end tables that need redone so I believe that will be the project for the paint…in a off white color with a beige tint to match my livingroom colors. I have glass and metal tables now that I dearly love all but the glass. I will like and share this on facebook too…Everyone HAVE A WONDERFUL and BLESSED day…Jessica…I have decided that in my shop the 10% I collect I am paying forward to a Colorado Meth Project.org, this is an organization in Colorado that battles the war on Meth…I also will be looking for an organization that wants to develop laws to fight bulling in Colorado to donate to as well so I so agree with your husbands “give til it hurts” idea…
I am a NEW Facebook fan!
Im glad Im not the only one who still has Chrismas Decorations up LOL…me too…guilty, guilty…not enough time in the day right now! I told my husband they may stay up until June OMG…scary thought! Just not enough time right now as my focus is getting the business off to the best start it can have so that is where my focus and energy is at right now and will be for a while so…gee…not sure when the Christmas will come down at home…Enjoy Hawaii…wish I was up for some beach time…sounds heavenly! We went this last June…Love the beaches there…and the warm waters…and the smells and my family that lives there…love everything about Hawaii except one thing…it is too far away from the mainland! 🙂

1. Only work on the pieces that speak to you. Don’t buy/get rid of pieces that you just don’t have a good feeling for.
2. While it is fun to branch out and try different/bold colors, don’t be afraid to continue working with the color combinations that please use most and you have the most success with. My best pieces, i.e. those that are most popular with others, are always the pieces I have done just to please myself! They seem to appeal to everybody else too!
Shared your website, liked your Facebook page. What wouldn’t I paint with milk paint! Anything that is not upholstered is fair game! I have followed Miss Mustard Seed from her beginnings and would love to try her milkpaint, Shutter Gray, on my kitchen cabinets.
